RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Culture is strengthening collaboration with the National Creative Economy Movement (GEKRAF) to promote the cultural economy as a key driver of national development. The initiative reflects a broader strategy to integrate cultural assets into sustainable economic growth.
The effort was highlighted during a meeting between Culture Minister, Fadli Zon, and GEKRAF representatives in Jakarta, Wedenesday 1 April 2026. The discussion focused on strengthening the cultural economy ecosystem, developing creative talent, and optimizing cultural heritage as a source of growth.
Minister Fadli Zon affirmed that culture plays a strategic role as both inspiration and foundation for the creative economy sector. “Culture is at the upstream, while the creative economy is at the downstream, making culture the foundation of creative industries,” he said.
In addition, he added that Indonesia’s cultural diversity offers a significant comparative advantage in developing cultural and creative industries. According to him, cultural resources provide an endless source of ideas, inspiration, and innovation.
The Ministry is also encouraging the utilization of cultural heritage to support economic activities. This includes developing museums, strengthening UNESCO-recognized heritage ecosystems, and promoting high-value cultural merchandise.
In addition, the government highlighted the importance of improving human resources capacity in the cultural and creative sectors. Training programs, talent management, and creative economy literacy are being prioritized to enhance global competitiveness.
GEKRAF Secretary General, Temmi Sumarlin, noted that the organization has focused on building a community-based creative economy in recent years. “We see a strong link between culture and the creative economy, and the challenge is ensuring cultural products have solid economic value,” she said.
Both parties agreed to strengthen collaboration in talent development, creative product curation, and international cultural promotion. The partnership is also expected to enhance Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy as part of its soft power strategy.
