RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia recorded a significant rise in cultural tourism during the Eid al-Fitr holiday period, with more than 551,000 visits to museums and heritage sites nationwide. The data, collected between March 16 and 27, 2026, reflects growing public interest in historical and cultural destinations.

The Ministry of Culture in Jakarta, Tuesday 31 March 2026 reported that visits were spread across 266 museum and heritage locations throughout the country. The surge indicates that cultural sites are increasingly becoming a preferred choice for families seeking both recreation and education.

Of the total figure, more than 155,000 visits were recorded at sites managed by the Museum and Cultural Heritage Agency. These visits were concentrated across 40 locations under direct government management.

Borobudur Temple emerged as the most visited site, attracting over 68,000 visitors during the holiday period. Other popular destinations included Arjuna Temple and the National Museum of Indonesia.

Meanwhile, strong visitor numbers were also recorded at sites not directly managed by the agency. The Tsunami Museum in Aceh, Bumiayu Temple Complex, and Sunan Giri burial complex ranked among the top destinations.

The Ministry of Culture emphasized its commitment to improving services and ensuring visitor safety at cultural sites. A ministry statement noted, “The integration of digital technology and public activation programs has become a key factor in attracting both domestic and international visitors.”

The government also expressed appreciation to the public for choosing museums and heritage sites as educational tourism destinations. It added, “Cultural preservation will continue to be strengthened through sustainable utilization strategies that benefit local communities.”

With this positive trend, the Ministry hopes to further enhance public awareness of preserving cultural heritage. It stressed that strengthening cultural identity remains essential for Indonesia’s future development.
