RRI.CO.ID, Yogyakarta - Indonesia’s Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, officially launched National Philately Day 2026 in Yogyakarta, Sunday, March 29, 2026. The event aims to strengthen philately as part of the country’s cultural development and public education.

The celebration was held at Taman Budaya Embung Giwangan and involved collaboration between the government, cultural institutions, and philatelic communities. Participants included collectors, academics, students, and cultural stakeholders from across Indonesia.

In his remarks, Fadli Zon emphasized that philately is more than a hobby. He described stamps as cultural artifacts that document the nation’s history, identity, and social development.

"Philately is a small object that holds a nation's big story,” he said. He conveyed that stamps have long served as a medium recording important events, traditions, and national milestones.

The minister also highlighted the global roots of philately, which began in the 19th century with the emergence of the first postage stamps. In Indonesia, stamps have evolved from colonial-era issues to modern expressions of national identity.

According to him, philatelic items capture diverse aspects of Indonesian life, from traditional houses and textiles to major historical events. He noted that such collections continue to function as living documentation through exhibitions and international exchanges.

"In the future, philately can become an instrument to strengthen cultural diplomacy.,” he added. The statement underlines philately’s potential role in promoting Indonesia on the global stage.

The government hopes the annual observance will expand public interest and engagement in philately. It is expected to reinforce cultural identity while encouraging younger generations to explore history through creative and educational means.
