RRI.CO.ID, Pacitan - Indonesia’s Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, visited the Song Terus Museum in Pacitan, East Java, Friday, March 27, 2026. The museum serves as a key prehistoric information center showcasing archaeological discoveries from the Song Terus Cave area.
During the visit, the minister highlighted the importance of developing the museum into a comprehensive cultural and educational hub. He emphasized its role in presenting a complete narrative of human civilization in the Indonesian archipelago.
The Song Terus site contains significant evidence of continuous human habitation spanning up to 300,000 years. Among the notable discoveries is the prehistoric human known as Mbah Sayem, estimated to be around 8,500 years old.
Fadli Zon explained that research in the area has involved both international and Indonesian scholars over decades. Early studies by figures such as Von Koenigswald and later contributions by Indonesian archaeologists have enriched understanding of the site.
"In this museum we can witness a series of human civilization journeys in Pacitan, from the beginning to modern humans as they are today.” he said. The statement underscores the museum’s role in making complex historical narratives accessible to the public.
The minister also stressed the need to enhance museum facilities to improve visitor experience. Planned additions include an auditorium, 3D film screenings, and cultural performance spaces.
“This is not only a place for storing artifacts, but also a very important center for cultural education and literacy,” he said. The remark reflects a broader vision of museums as dynamic learning environments.
The visit reaffirms the government’s commitment to strengthening cultural institutions and preserving heritage. Authorities hope the Song Terus Museum will become an active cultural hub that supports education, research, and public engagement.
