RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian Ministry of Human Rights is directly monitoring the medical treatment of Andrie Yunus, an activist from the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), who was targeted in an acid attack.
The assault left him with burns covering 24 percent of his body, including his face and eyes. He is currently receiving intensive care at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital (RSCM) in Jakarta.
Head of the Jakarta Regional Office of the Ministry of Human Rights, Mikael Azedo Harwito, said the monitoring is being conducted to ensure optimal medical treatment, particularly for Andrie’s right eye, which suffered the most serious damage.
According to the hospital, he remains under intensive care with a focus on maintaining the function and structure of the affected organ. “This condition causes thinning of the surrounding tissue, requiring further intervention to support the healing process,” Azedo said in Jakarta on Sunday, March 29, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
He explained that over the past three days, the medical team discovered ischemia, or a lack of blood flow, in approximately 40 percent of the area under the sclera of the right eye, causing tissue thinning.
On March 25, 2026, Andrie underwent a comprehensive operation involving ophthalmologists and plastic surgeons. The procedure included tissue transfer to close the open area, placement of an amniotic membrane, and reinsertion of protective lenses.
The medical team also found progressive thinning of the corneal tissue due to ongoing inflammation. Plastic surgeons performed debridement, or removal of dead tissue, along with skin grafts on the eyes, chest, and shoulders to expedite healing of the burns. “Based on this evaluation, we decided to take further action to maintain the tissue condition and support the healing process,” Azedo said.
Regarding protection, Andrie is currently being treated in the High Care Unit (HCU) with restricted visitation. His family and support team have received protection from the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK).
The Ministry of Human Rights emphasized that coordination among stakeholders—including the hospital, legal team, KontraS, and the Advocacy Team for Democracy (TAUD), continues to be strengthened to ensure comprehensive recovery, both medically and in terms of rights protection.
On Friday evening, March 13, 2026, Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of KontraS, was attacked with acid by two assailants on motorcycles in Jakarta. The assault occurred shortly after he finished recording a podcast at the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation office, where he had been discussing themes of militarism and remilitarization in Indonesia. ***
