RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has canceled plans to implement distance learning starting in April 2026. The policy had initially been designed as part of a national energy efficiency strategy.

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Pratikno, confirmed that teaching and learning activities will continue as usual with face-to-face classes in schools. “Students will keep learning as usual,” Pratikno said in a written statement in Jakarta on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.

He noted that hybrid methods had been discussed across ministries, but online learning was deemed unnecessary at this time. The government’s priority, he said, is to maintain the quality of education in line with national improvement programs. “The president’s priority is to improve education quality comprehensively, with a focus on schools under various ministries,” Minister Pratikno said.

The decision followed coordination between ministries, including the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Religious Affairs. All parties agreed that maintaining in-person learning is essential to educational stability.

Minister Pratikno emphasized that efficiency measures remain important. “Public services and the improvement of human resources must continue to be strengthened,” he said.

Earlier, the government had considered online schooling as a way to save energy. Learning methods, whether online or offline, were expected to be adjusted to the characteristics of each subject.

“Efficiency measures must be carefully designed, based on energy consumption data and mobility levels in each sector, so they do not create excessive negative impacts on society,” Minister Pratikno said. (Misni Parjiati/Lasti Martina)
