RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) emphasized the importance of strengthening weather and climate observations during the 76th World Meteorological Day on March 23, 2026. Under the theme "Observing Today, Protecting Indonesia’s Future," BMKG is integrating current data as a foundation for public protection amidst complex climate change challenges.

The Head of BMKG, Teuku Faisal Fathani, explained that every piece of data collected today represents a crucial investment in the safety of future generations. He stressed that as a tropical archipelagic nation, Indonesia faces high vulnerability to hydrometeorological disasters, necessitating the continuous expansion of observation systems.

"This year's World Meteorological Day theme reminds us that every piece of data collected today is part of protecting the nation's future. BMKG is committed to continuously strengthening observation systems, expanding networks, and improving services so that the Indonesian people are better protected and prepared to face the challenges of climate change," Faisal stated in Jakarta on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.

Currently, BMKG operates more than 180 meteorological stations and 44 weather radars across the archipelago to monitor atmospheric movements continuously. The reliability of this system enables the routine delivery of extreme weather early warnings, which serve as a vital basis for stakeholders to take preparedness measures.

A synergy of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and expert precision is now utilized to process millions of observation data points into more precise weather forecast information. Furthermore, BMKG is strengthening international collaboration through the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) network to ensure Indonesia's climate monitoring system remains connected to global standards.

The success of public protection relies heavily on the rapid response of local governments and citizens to early warnings issued based on numerical data. BMKG is also actively pursuing digital transformation to ensure that weather information is easily accessible to various sectors, ranging from agriculture to maritime and air transportation.

Faisal concluded his explanation by asserting that accurate observation is the first step in building national resilience against the climate crisis. "Observation leading to early warning is the beginning of protecting the future. Through accurate data today, we are building a shield of safety for tomorrow," he said.
