RRI. CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has begun implementing traffic control measures as the annual Eid homecoming travel, locally known as “mudik,” gains momentum. A significant increase in vehicle movement has been recorded along the Jakarta–Cikampek toll road, one of the country’s main travel corridors.

To manage the surge, authorities introduced a phased local one-way traffic system as an anticipatory step. The policy is designed to ease congestion and ensure smoother travel for millions of holiday travelers.

Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi, National Police Traffic Corps Chief Agus Suryonugroho, and Jasa Marga President Director Rivan A. Purwantono conducted a field inspection at kilometer 29 Tuesday night, March 17, 2026. The visit served as an initial evaluation of the traffic engineering measures implemented earlier that day.

Dudy said the policy is part of an integrated government strategy to maintain traffic flow and improve safety during the peak travel period. He added that the measures are being carried out in accordance with a joint ministerial decree regulating holiday traffic management.

“Earlier today, the National Police Traffic Corps began implementing the first phase of a local one-way system from kilometer 70 to kilometer 263. We hope this will ensure smoother journeys for the public,” Dudy said.

He emphasized that the implementation aligns with existing regulations and is intended to anticipate traffic spikes. The measures are being applied gradually and based on real-time conditions in the field.

“Alhamdulillah, so far traffic conditions remain under control and are flowing smoothly,” he noted. He also expressed hope that the policy would have a direct positive impact on travelers during the homecoming season.

The traffic engineering policy forms part of a broader integrated system that includes contraflow arrangements and restrictions on freight transport operations. Authorities have adopted a flexible and adaptive approach to respond to changing traffic conditions.

The National Police Traffic Corps reported that the measures have already contributed to a 15.5 percent reduction in accidents and a 38.9 percent drop in fatalities. These figures highlight the effectiveness of coordinated traffic management during peak travel periods.

Meanwhile, toll operator Jasa Marga reported that as of the afternoon of March 17, approximately 1.1 million vehicles had left Jakarta, representing around 32 percent of the projected total. The number is expected to continue rising as the peak of the homecoming exodus approaches.

The minister also reiterated the importance of compliance with restrictions on heavy trucks, particularly those with three or more axles. He urged logistics operators to temporarily halt operations in order to maintain traffic flow and ensure the safety of holiday travelers.
