RRI.RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has updated its weather forecast ahead of the early Eid "mudik" period in 2026. While atmospheric conditions across most of Indonesia remain relatively conducive, the public is urged to stay alert for potential rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds in several regions.

The Head of BMKG, Teuku Faisal Fathani, reminded travelers to remain calm yet vigilant regarding weather developments during their journey. He emphasized the importance of referring to official information sources and not being easily influenced by unverified reports.

“Continuously monitor updated land, sea, and air weather information through BMKG’s official channels to adjust your travel plans accordingly,” Faisal stated in a press release on Sunday, March 15, 2026.

BMKG's Acting Deputy for Meteorology, Andri Ramdhani, explained that the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) is currently active in the southern and eastern parts of Indonesia. This condition, followed by Equatorial Rossby and Kelvin wave activity between March 13–20, 2026, strengthens atmospheric dynamics that support rain cloud growth in various areas.

BMKG predicts that moderate to heavy rain may occur from March 14–17, 2026, in parts of Sumatra as well as central and eastern Java. Meanwhile, from March 18–20, 2026, rain is also expected in parts of South Sulawesi and Papua.

In the aviation sector, BMKG has identified potential Cumulonimbus cloud growth with significant coverage along several flight routes, particularly in the Molucca Sea and northern Papua. The probability of these clouds appearing is estimated to be over 75 percent, requiring heightened attention for aviation activities in those areas.

Acting Director of Public Meteorology at BMKG, Ida Pramuwardani, recommended that travelers routinely check weather updates via the InfoBMKG app or the official BMKG website.

She also urged the public to prepare emergency kits before traveling, increase caution when driving in rainy conditions, and ensure their homes are safe from hydrometeorological risks before leaving for the holidays.
