RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has pledged to thoroughly investigate the acid attack on Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for the Missing and Victims of Violence (KontraS), Andrie Yunus.
Vice President’s Special Staff Achmad Adhitya said the government strongly condemns the incident and guarantees freedom of expression for all citizens. “I condemn the acid attack on Andrie Yunus,” Adhitya said in a written statement on Sunday, March 15, 2026. He noted that freedom of expression is guaranteed in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s directives.
Adhitya emphasized that the government will ensure the legal process is carried out and prevent similar incidents from recurring. He added that the victim is entitled to justice for the violence he suffered. “The government will always be responsible for upholding justice and safeguarding democratic space. There is zero tolerance for acts of violence,” he said.
Andrie Yunus was attacked by unidentified assailants on Thursday night, around 11:37 p.m. Jakarta Time, on Salemba I Street in Central Jakarta. He had just finished recording a podcast at the Jakarta office of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) discussing militarism and a judicial review of the Indonesian National Military (TNI) Law.
Two perpetrators riding a motorcycle approached Yunus and doused him with a liquid suspected to be acid before fleeing. The attack caused burns to his hands and feet, impaired his vision, and affected approximately 24 percent of his body.
He was immediately rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment, with medical efforts focused on his eyes. Andrie remains under the care of the medical team. (Gusti Panji/Lasti Martina)
