RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has issued a Joint Decree signed by seven ministers to regulate the use of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in education . The policy aims to ensure that technological advancement supports learning while protecting students from potential risks.

The decree applies to all levels of education, ranging from early childhood education to higher education, including informal learning within families. The regulation was introduced in Jakarta, Thursday in Jakarta, 13 March 2026 as part of the government’s broader effort to guide the responsible use of digital technology.

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno said the policy was designed to ensure that digital technology is used wisely and according to students’ readiness. He emphasized that the use of technology and AI must consider the age and educational level of learners.

Pratikno noted that digital technology can bring many benefits if used responsibly and with proper guidance. “With this joint decree, we hope the use of digital technology and artificial intelligence by Indonesian children will become better and wiser, bringing positive benefits while reducing potential risks,” he said.

Under the new regulation, students at primary and secondary school levels are not allowed to use instant AI tools that directly generate answers to their questions. However, AI can still be used when it is specifically designed to support the learning process.

Examples include robotics simulations and educational applications powered by artificial intelligence. These tools are expected to help students develop skills while maintaining their cognitive growth and critical thinking abilities.

Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti said the policy is aligned with Indonesia’s ongoing digitalization program in schools. “We have distributed more than 288,000 Interactive Flat Panels, which can support the implementation of coding and AI learning in schools across Indonesia,” he explained.

Through this policy, the government hopes schools, teachers, and families will use technology responsibly in the learning process. The regulation is also expected to help Indonesian students become familiar with digital technology from an early age without neglecting their cognitive development and character building
