Muslim Scholar Quraish Shihab Affirms Peace as Central Message of the Quran

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta: Muslim scholar Prof. Muhammad Quraish Shihab emphasized peace as the central message of the Quran in his sermon. He delivered the statement during the State Commemoration of Nuzulul Qur’an 1447 H/2026 M at the State Palace in Jakarta, Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The event was attended by President Prabowo Subianto, religious leaders, and several government officials.

In his sermon, Quraish Shihab explained that the Quran places peace as an essential goal in human life. He said peace is not only a social necessity, but also a fundamental religious command. According to him, genuine peace should begin within every individual.

“Allah obliges us to realize peace. Peace begins from our souls. Peace from our souls spreads to our society and the wider world,” he said.

He added that peace is the aspiration shared by all humans and religions across the world. The Quran encourages believers to prioritize peaceful solutions in human relations. Even when an opponent invites peace, Muslims are taught to accept the offer.

“Peace is the aspiration of all humans and all religions. The Quran even states that if an enemy invites you to peace, then accept that peace,” he said.

Quraish Shihab also reminded that the pursuit of peace must always go hand in hand with justice. According to him, justice should never be sacrificed in the name of peace. He stressed that both values must be upheld together in social and national life.

The state commemoration of Nuzulul Qur’an also served as a moment of reflection for the nation. The event reminded participants about the Quran’s universal message of peace, justice, and unity. These values remain essential for strengthening harmony within Indonesia’s diverse society.
