RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Speaker of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, has asked the Indonesian Military (TNI) to provide a clear explanation regarding the decision to raise the military alert status amid the escalating geopolitical situation in the Middle East. The House believes that it needs a clear explanation so the public understands the basis of the policy.

As quoted by the official website, dpr.go.id, Puan said the House, through the relevant commission, will request a direct explanation from the TNI regarding the background and urgency of the alert status decision.

“We will ask the relevant commission to request an explanation from the TNI regarding this matter,” Puan said when speaking to journalists at Nusantara II, the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.

She explained that, in principle, the country’s defense apparatus must always remain in a state of readiness to anticipate various possible developments in global situations. However, if there is a decision to elevate the alert status, there should be a comprehensive explanation regarding the reasons and considerations behind it.

“Indeed, the military or the TNI must always be on alert. However, if there is an official determination of such a status in the current situation, it should be explained concretely whether such a measure is truly necessary or not,” she said.

Puan also affirmed that such clarification is important so the public can have a clear description of the security situation and the anticipatory steps being taken by the state.

She added that the House, through Commission I, which oversees defense and foreign affairs, will carry out its oversight function by requesting clarification from its counterparts.

“It would be better if the TNI provides a detailed rationale so that the public understands what actually forms the basis of the policy,” she conveyed.

According to her, transparency in strategic issues such as national security is also important to maintain public trust while ensuring that every policy step is taken carefully and proportionally. She added that the House will continue to monitor global developments that could potentially affect national interests, including the recent escalation of conflict dynamics in the Middle East.

Through oversight mechanisms in the relevant commissions, the House seeks to ensure that every step taken by state institutions remains within a clear policy framework and fully considers national interests.
