RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - House Speaker Puan Maharani opened the House of Representatives’ Fourth Plenary Session of the 2025–2026 legislative year by raising concerns over the escalating conflict in the Middle East following the United States and Israel’s attack on Iran.
Puan said the world is witnessing a geopolitical confrontation involving military force, reflecting the complexity of international relations marked by strategic interests, regional security dominance, and global power competition.
“The conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran not only reflects conflicting interests at the regional level, but also illustrates a major challenge for future global governance,” she stated at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
She noted that the current military escalation shows a tendency to disregard the basic principles of international relations, particularly respect for national sovereignty.
According to her, the situation underscores the dominance of certain countries over others and highlights the weakening effectiveness of the global security system in maintaining balance among nations.
Puan also pointed to the limited role of multilateral institutions, which she said have failed to prevent the conflict from escalating further. She emphasized the need to strengthen international law and global institutions to safeguard peace, justice, and stability.
The House of Representatives urged the United Nations to take more active steps to uphold international law, protect civilians, and maintain global stability. The House also expressed support for diplomatic initiatives aimed at encouraging restraint, avoiding wider escalation, respecting sovereignty, and resolving disputes peacefully.
“The House of Representatives also emphasized that the Indonesian government must continue to pursue an independent and active foreign policy to safeguard national interests wisely, consistently, and constructively in responding to evolving global geopolitical dynamics,” Puan said.
On the same occasion, she expressed condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in the ongoing conflict. ***
