RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has underscored the need for strict food safety management in the Free Nutritious Meals initiative. It is part of the efforts to prevent food poisoning.

A national webinar on “Public Health Strategies to Ensure Nutrition and Prevent Food Poisoning” was held at Jakarta on March 5, 2026. There, Head of BRIN’s Health Research Organization, Indi Darmayanti, noted that food poisoning incidents still occur in several regions, highlighting the need for better food management systems.

“Several cases of food poisoning still occur in various regions,” she said. “This condition reminds us that mass food service systems must be managed carefully, with clear standards and based on public health principles.”

According to her, a public health approach is important to be applied in every stage of food preparation, starting from the selection of raw materials, hygienic processing, to education for all parties involved. Thus, community nutrition programs can run effectively and safely for the beneficiaries.

In the discussion, BRIN also invited international expert John David L. Comandante from the University of the Philippines. Comandante serves at the National Poison Management and Control Center and shared insights on food poisoning management practices in the Philippines.

The forum aimed to exchange knowledge on safe food handling, risk prevention, and public health approaches in large-scale nutrition programs. BRIN hopes such discussions will help strengthen Indonesia’s food safety system and minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses as nutrition initiatives expand nationwide.
