RRI.CO.ID, Tanggerang - Indonesia is exploring new ways to expand public access to films through a digital micro cinema concept known as Layar Digi. Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, visited the facility in Gading Serpong, Tangerang, Thursday, 5 March 2026, to review the initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s film ecosystem.

During the visit, the minister and invited guests watched a demonstration screening of the teaser for the animated film Knight Kris. The screening provided a preview of the visual and audio quality offered by the micro cinema format.

Fadli Zon said the initiative could help address Indonesia’s shortage of cinema screens, particularly in regions that do not yet have conventional theaters. According to him, expanding access to screening venues is essential for supporting the growth of the national film industry.

“This is an extraordinary innovation with an out-of-the-box approach to addressing the challenge we face, namely the shortage of cinema screens,” Fadli Zon said. “It fills the empty spaces in areas that still do not have cinemas.”

He added that Indonesia’s film industry has shown strong growth in recent years, supported by a large domestic audience. However, strengthening the overall ecosystem remains important to ensure balanced film distribution and sustain public interest in cinema.

“Layar Digi can reach sub-districts and even regions that do not yet have cinemas, which is truly remarkable. The opportunity is huge and it will support culture while also encouraging the downstream creative economy,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Creative Economy, Teuku Riefky Harsya, noted that the initiative comes at a time when Indonesian film production and quality are increasing. He said expanding cinema access is becoming more important as many cities and districts across the country still lack movie theaters.

“If this is developed seriously, it will not take long for it to become one of the largest cinema networks in Indonesia,” Teuku Riefky said, adding that the Layar Digi program is expected to expand gradually to various regions across the country.
