RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has urged the government to withdraw from the Board of Peace (BoP) following Israeli and US military strikes against Iran. The call came after the attack that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in Tehran on Saturday, February 28, 2026.

Responding to the demand, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives’ Commission I, Dave Agung Laksono, said Indonesia’s presence in the BoP is not merely symbolic. “It is a tangible measure to guarantee that our voice is heard to stop aggression and uphold international law,” he said in a press statement in Jakarta on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

Dave emphasized that Indonesia has been committed since the preamble of its 1945 Constitution to participate in maintaining world order. “Indonesia’s presence in the BoP has strategic value, affirming its independent and active foreign policy, its impartiality, and its promotion of peaceful solutions,” he said.

He added that this step is consistent with national interests and reinforces Indonesia’s role.

Commission I supports the government to continue promoting Indonesia’s role through bilateral and multilateral channels, including at the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), with a consistent stance of rejecting aggression, upholding international law, and striving for regional stability.

Earlier, the MUI condemned the US and Israeli assault on Iran, calling it contrary to humanitarian values and the preamble of the 1945 Constitution. The statement, signed by MUI Chairman KH Anwar Iskandar on Sunday, March 1, conveyed condolences for Khamenei’s death and outlined nine points in response to the attack.

The MUI argued that Indonesia’s membership in the BoP is ineffective in achieving peace in Palestine, citing the US-Israel strike as evidence of worsening regional conflict.
