RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Student Executive Board (BEM) team of Sriwijaya University (UNSRI) has developed an innovative ready-to-drink clean water installation to meet the needs of residents in Kampung Landuh, Aceh Tamiang.

The initiative is part of the Program Mahasiswa Berdampak (Impactful Student Program), launched by the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education, which focuses on post-disaster recovery and sustainable community empowerment.

The program delivered two units of fresh water treatment technology to the Ladang Lestari Farmer Group in Kampung Landuh.

Each unit has a capacity of 2,000 gallons per day and uses a combined adsorption and ultrafiltration membrane system. Raw water sourced from rivers or wells is processed through adsorbent tubes containing activated carbon, manganese greensand, and activated silica, then filtered through a fine-pore membrane.

The lecturer supervising the UNSRI Impact Team, David Bahrim, said the innovation was introduced as a solution to the limited availability of clean water. “After the disaster, the Kampung Landuh community had difficulty obtaining drinkable water because surface water wells had been contaminated. Meanwhile, the water quality also did not meet standards due to high pH and TDS content,” David said in Aceh Tamiang on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.

He added that the clean water treatment technology is expected to improve access to safe water and ease the burden on residents in meeting their daily drinking needs.

Program coordinator Dandi Dwi Wiradinata explained that the ultrafiltration membrane technology can filter suspended particles, bacteria, viruses, and colloids without the need for additional chemicals.

The process uses pump pressure to push water through a synthetic polymer membrane, reinforced with ultraviolet light to ensure the water is safe for use. The result is purified water ready for agricultural and household needs.

Residents of Landuh Rantau Village expressed appreciation for the support provided by UNSRI students through the Impactful Student Program, which assisted in post-flood recovery in their village.

Previously, from December 19–21, 2025, UNSRI BEM students visited flood-affected areas in Pasaman Barat, Padang, West Sumatra, where they distributed basic necessities such as food and clean clothing. (Gusti Panji/Lasti Martina)
