Government Urges Fish Protein-Based Food Diversification in Gresik

RRI.CO.ID, Gresik – The National Food Agency supports the strengthening of fishery production in Gresik Regency, East Java. Director of Supervision of Safety Standards Implementation at the Agency, Hermawan, made the statement on Monday, 23 February 2026.

This step was taken to strengthen national food stocks through animal protein sources. In addition, fish-based food diversification is considered important to reduce dependence on a single commodity.Gresik was chosen because it is a very large fishing production center.

Hermawan explained the importance of maintaining fish stock availability. According to him, continuity of production at the upstream level will maintain market price stability.

“From the perspective of national food security, we are pushing for the maintenance of fish availability and supply stability. Fish is a source of high-quality protein, and its consumption needs to be continuously strengthened as part of food diversification based on local resources,” Hermawan conveyed.

The government is also focusing on strengthening the downstream sector to improve public nutrition. This includes ensuring food safety and efficient distribution of catches.

“In addition to strengthening upstream aspects, strengthening downstream aspects is also very important through food safety and quality assurance, processed product development, and efficient distribution. Thus, strong production in the region can truly have an impact on increasing consumption and improving community nutrition,” he stated.

Gresik Regency has 28,653 hectares of cultivated land managed by tens of thousands of fish farmers. Fish production in this region reached a fantastic figure of 160,439 tons in 2025.
