Sukabumi Successfully Develops National Superior Rice Varieties

Sukabumi Regency has once again achieved a notable success in the agricultural sector. The region has been named as the top performer of local rice varieties nationwide for the period 2005-2025 by the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture.

The award was received by the Regent of Sukabumi and the Sukabumi Regency Agriculture Office, marking the local government's commitment to preserving seed diversity and agricultural genetic resources.

Aep Majmudin, Head of the Sukabumi Regency Agriculture Office, emphasized that this achievement is the result of decades of hard work. "This award is the result of decades of hard work, from data collection to variety registration and farmer assistance," he said.

Aep also explained that Sukabumi's local rice is not just a food source, but also a cultural identity and heritage. Local varieties have unique advantages, such as resistance to adverse local conditions and distinctive flavors with high economic value.

Registering varieties is a strategic step to protect this wealth legally and prevent it from being lost. "Registering varieties is a key measure to legally safeguard this heritage from extinction," he added.

This achievement positions Sukabumi as a leading region in preserving agricultural germplasm. Amid the rising imports of seeds and modern varieties, Sukabumi consistently maintains its local seed heritage as the foundation of sustainable agriculture.

Aep also emphasized that this marks just the beginning for further progress. "This is not the end, but rather a starting point. Local varieties are a valuable national asset. Our task is to preserve them, develop them, and ensure they benefit future generations," he concluded.

With this achievement, Sukabumi is expected to continue leading in preserving and developing local rice varieties, improving the welfare of farmers and local communities.
