RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - State-owned Railways Company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Regional Area (Daop) 1 Jakarta is bracing for a massive holiday migration for the 2026 Eid al-Fitr transport period. The company reports that 480,000 train tickets have already been snapped up for the travel window spanning March 11 to April 1.
As reported by Antara, this early surge in bookings underscores the high demand for rail travel as a primary choice for Indonesians heading home for the festivities.
Franoto Wibowo, the Public Relations Manager for KAI Daop 1 Jakarta, confirmed that nearly half a million seats have already been booked. He noted that approximately 98,000 seats remain available for specific departure dates from major hubs like Gambir and Pasar Senen stations.
"For departures from Gambir and Pasar Senen Station, seat availability on March 11 was recorded at 31,587 seats, March 12 19,060 seats, March 13 and 14 9,186 seats each, and March 15 10,339 seats," said Franoto in Jakarta, on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
Remaining seat availability varies significantly across travel windows, with the highest capacity remaining open on March 16th with 5,016 seats, and 2,127 on March 17th. This figure drops to just 901 seats on March 18th as peak travel days approach.
Furthermore, on March 21st, there were 12,772 seats available for travelers. For the period from March 22nd to April 1st, 2026, there are still over 20,000 seats available per day.
Franoto explained that seat availability data is dynamic and can change at any time due to ongoing bookings or ticket cancellations by prospective passengers.
To accommodate the influx of travelers, KAI Daop 1 Jakarta has bolstered its operations by deploying 16 additional trips. These include 10 extra services from Gambir Station and six from Pasar Senen Station.
This expansion brings the total to 84 long-distance train departures per day from the Jakarta region throughout the Eid transport season. These additional services are a strategic move to ensure that the infrastructure can handle the heightened seasonal pressure while maintaining service standards.
Further incentivizing rail travel, the government has introduced a 30 percent tariff discount for commercial economy class trains. This fiscal stimulus aims to provide the public with a transport option that is not only safe and comfortable but also financially accessible.
According to Franoto, this policy is expected to help the community secure a mode of transportation that is safe, comfortable, on time, and affordable during the Eid al-Fitr period. Travelers are encouraged to monitor the official booking platforms closely as the situation evolves toward the peak homecoming dates. ***
