RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government plans to build the country’s first nuclear power plant in the near future. Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation at the ministry, Eniya Listiani Dewi, stated that the power plant is targeted to be connected to the national electricity grid at the earliest by 2032.

"(The power plant will be) on grid in 2032. If it will be on-grid in 2032, it means it must already be commissioned by 2032. This is the fastest target," she said as quoted from Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources' podcast published on Sunday, 15 February 2026.

Eniya added that the construction of the 500-megawatt power plant is currently in the feasibility stage. The exact location is to be determined by mid-year.

“The locations already exist, in two areas. So, roughly around the middle of this year, the site determination will be finalized. But (right now) it is already in the process of being discussed,” she said.

Previously, several locations were reported as potential candidates for the nuclear power plant site. However, the strongest contenders are the Bangka Belitung Islands, located east of Sumatra, and West Kalimantan.

Eniya also said that the government is currently conducting public outreach regarding nuclear power plants in Indonesia. She hopes that the public will no longer be afraid of the potential negative impacts associated with them.

“In fact, many people don’t really understand (about nuclear energy), even though we have already been using it,” she conveyed.
