RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) addressed to the government's target of revitalizing 71,700 schools throughout Indonesia. They urged that schools in worst conditions be given the highest priority for rehabilitation, including those in the most disadvantaged, frontier, and outermost (3T) regions.

"Raising the target to 71,700 schools is a positive move. However, its implementation must be based on objective and transparent needs mapping," said Deputy Chairman of Commission X of the DPR, Lalu Hadrian, on Sunday, February 15, 2026.

He revealed that the educational gap in the 3T regions is very visible and most obvious. According to him, many school buildings in the 3T regions are damaged and unsuitable for use.

Therefore, the central government must collaborate with local administrations to speed up data gathering and program implementation. "This includes ensuring strict oversight to ensure that the budget is properly targeted," he said.

He then assured that Commission X of the House of Representatives (DPR) would continue to oversee education legislation and budgets. "This is to ensure the revitalization program runs effectively and has a direct impact on improving the quality of learning," he said.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) estimates that Indonesia had about 1.18 million classrooms for elementary school students in the 2024/2025 academic year. But over 60% of them were in need of repair.

At the junior high school level, 50.33 percent of classrooms were in good condition, with 24.73 percent sustaining minor damage. Another 17.96 percent were moderately damaged, and 6.97 percent were severely damaged.

The goal of Kemendikdasmen is to revive 11,700 Indonesian schools. But President Prabowo Subianto has asked for an additional 60,000 schools to be added to this figure, raising the total revitalization aim to 71,700 schools. ***
