RRI.CO.ID, Semarang - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka enlivened the atmosphere at the Semawis Lunar New Year Market in Semarang, Central Java, on Saturday, February 14, 2026, greeting visitors and vendors at the bustling night market, which has become an annual cultural icon of the city’s Imlek celebrations.
His presence was warmly welcomed by residents crowding the market area. Speaking to them, the Vice President emphasized the importance of preserving traditions as a vital part of the nation’s cultural identity that must be safeguarded and passed down.
“He reminded us to protect these traditions, so they are not lost, because once gone, they are difficult to revive,” Chair of the Semarang Chinatown Community for Tourism (Kopi Semawis), Harjanto Halim, said on Saturday, January 14, 2026.
“What has already been established must be maintained and nurtured, especially given the diversity that thrives here," he added.
The Vice President also praised the consistent organization of the event, noting its positive impact on strengthening the local economy. He added that the market reflects the spirit of tolerance and togetherness, evident in the diverse backgrounds of both visitors and traders participating in Semawis.
“The Vice President was pleased because this event helps sustain the people’s economy,” Harjanto said, adding that VP Gibran deeply appreciated the diversity fostered through the market. ***
