RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir, said the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has praised the successful organization of the 2026 AFC Futsal Asian Cup. According to AFC, the final match between Indonesia and Iran was considered Asia's greatest futsal final.

Erick Thohir stated that AFC’s assessment was not only based on the quality of the final match but also on the overall tournament organization. This included infrastructure readiness, match operations, and the strong enthusiasm shown by supporters throughout the competition.

“AFC appreciated it and said this was the best final they have seen, not only in terms of competition but also from the start of the tournament,” Erick Thohir said on Saturday, 7 February 2026. “They highly appreciated the vibrant crowds and said this was the best,” he added.

According to Erick Thohir, the success of the tournament has become strong credentials for Indonesia to bid for other major international sporting events. One of the opportunities currently being considered is hosting the 2028 Futsal World Cup.

“From the government and futsal side, maybe we can try to host the Futsal World Championship in Indonesia,” Erick Thohir said. “Maybe it is possible,” he added.

He explained that the 2028 edition could receive special consideration for Asia. “If Indonesia were to host in 2028, Asia would host it twice, and maybe FIFA, which oversees futsal, could show some tolerance,” Erick Thohir said.

In the final of the 2026 AFC Futsal Asian Cup, Iran emerged as champions after defeating Indonesia 5–4 in a penalty shootout. The match ended in a dramatic 5–5 draw after extra time before being decided on penalties.

The title further confirmed Iran’s status as the dominant force in Asian futsal, often referred to as the continent’s undisputed powerhouse. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s runner-up finish marked the best achievement in the national team’s history at the AFC Futsal Asian Cup.
