RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has begun reorganizing fishing vessels at the Muara Angke Nusantara Fishing Port (PPN) in Jakarta to ease severe overcrowding that poses risks to maritime safety and disrupts capture fisheries operations.

Since early 2026, the ministry has been working with the Jakarta Marine and Fisheries Agency to identify fishing vessels operating in Muara Angke.

The process covers permit status, vessel condition, and mapping of port entry and exit routes to ensure smoother access for fishermen to and from fishing grounds.

“We are mapping the port’s entry and exit channels to facilitate fishermen’s access to their fishing grounds,” said Lotharia Latif, Director General of Capture Fisheries at the ministry, on Friday, January 30, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He said the identification and reorganization efforts were aimed at ensuring smooth port operations, maintaining navigation safety, and providing optimal services for fishermen and fisheries business operators.

The vessel reorganization involves cross-sector coordination, including the port authority, the Muara Angke port management unit, the Nizam Zachman Oceanic Fishing Port (PPS), and the Jakarta base of the Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance (PSDKP).

Lotharia said vessels currently crowding the docks are being directed to moor in designated areas around the port, with safety a top priority.

In addition to congestion, he noted that recent adverse weather has forced many vessels to remain docked rather than head out to sea, further increasing the port's ship backlog. This situation has underscored the urgency of reorganizing vessel placement to reduce risks to fishermen and fisheries operators.

“This issue cannot be resolved by the government alone. It requires cooperation from all parties, including vessel owners, to ensure orderly and sustainable management,” Lotharia said.

Through the structured reorganization, the ministry aims for Muara Angke to operate as a safer, more orderly fishing port while supporting the sustainability of Jakarta’s fisheries sector. ***
