RRI.CO.ID, Probolinggo - Indonesia has officially inaugurated the Tengger Museum near Mount Bromo in East Java as part of its efforts to preserve indigenous cultural heritage. The museum highlights the traditions and values of the Tengger community, one of Indonesia’s oldest indigenous groups.
The inauguration was led by Minister of Culture Fadli Zon in Probolinggo, Monday, 26 January 2026. The opening marked the completion of a major revitalization program carried out by the central government in cooperation with local authorities.
The revitalization reflects Indonesia’s broader commitment to safeguarding cultural diversity amid growing global tourism. The Mount Bromo area is one of Southeast Asia’s most visited natural destinations, attracting both domestic and international travellers.
“I appreciate the strong cooperation between the local government and our cultural preservation agency in revitalizing the Tengger Museum,” Fadli Zon said. He emphasized that collaboration is essential in protecting indigenous heritage.
According to the minister, the museum plays a strategic role in preserving traditions that have been passed down for generations. “This revitalization is a concrete commitment to protecting the cultural heritage, traditions, and customs of the Tengger people,” he said.
The Tengger Museum houses sacred heirlooms, traditional attire, historical documentation, and other cultural expressions of the Tengger community. These collections reflect core values such as harmony with nature, mutual cooperation, tolerance, and spiritual balance.
“We want museums to serve not only as storage spaces, but also as centers for information, education, and cultural exchange,” he said. The approach aligns with international standards for modern museum management and cultural diplomacy.
The government expects the Tengger Museum to strengthen cultural tourism while supporting local economic growth. Officials believe the museum will become an essential stop for visitors seeking to better understand the cultural landscape surrounding Mount Bromo.
