RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Ministry of Trade, in collaboration with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), has organized a business matching event to expand Indonesian SME exports to Japan. The initiative reflects Indonesia’s strategy to strengthen trade ties with one of Asia’s most demanding consumer markets.
The business matching was held at the Ministry of Trade office in Jakarta, Tuesday, 20 January 2026. The event brought together 30 Indonesian micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) producing fast-moving consumer goods with four major Japanese retail companies.
Participating Indonesian SMEs represented diverse sectors, including furniture, home appliances, cosmetics and skincare, pet supplies, as well as food and beverages. These sectors were selected based on their growing relevance in Japan’s retail and lifestyle markets.
Director General of National Export Development at the Ministry of Trade, Fajarini Puntodewi, said the initiative aims at broadening access for Indonesian FMCG products into Japan. According to her, Japan’s high standards for quality and product safety require close alignment between suppliers and buyers.
“This business matching serves as an important platform to align market standards so Indonesian products can meet Japan’s strict requirements,” Puntodewi said during the event. She mentioned that such alignment is crucial for building long-term export partnerships.
The meetings were conducted through one-on-one sessions, allowing SMEs to present products, showcase samples, and directly negotiate pricing with Japanese retailers. This format was designed to accelerate mutual understanding and potential commercial agreements.
According to her, Indonesia and Japan have significant potential to deepen cooperation beyond the automotive sector. Industries such as furniture, home living, wellness, personal care, and beauty products are expected to emerge as new strengths within the global supply chain.
