RRI.CO.ID, Riau - The Indonesian government has reaffirmed that the national rice supply remains secure, supported by the highest stock level in the country’s history. At the same time, authorities are intensifying efforts to crack down on the circulation of illegal rice to safeguard food stability and protect farmers.
Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, underscored that the government is not only taking firm action against illegal rice distribution, but is also implementing concrete measures to ensure sufficient and equitable rice supply across all regions of Indonesia. He made the statement during a working visit to Tanjung Balai Karimun, Riau Islands, on Monday, 19 January 2026.
According to Amran, Indonesia is currently experiencing a rice surplus, eliminating any justification for shortages in certain areas. He stressed that the strong national stock position reflects the government’s success in managing food reserves and strengthening domestic supply chains.
“Now our stock is the highest since independence. The carryover stock has reached 3.2 million tons, which has never happened before. In addition, stock held by hotels, restaurants, and catering services stands at 12.5 million tons, also the highest in history,” Amran said.
The minister further noted that ensuring the fair distribution of rice nationwide is a direct directive from President of the Republic of Indonesia. The policy aims to maintain food price stability, protect farmers’ livelihoods, and ensure consumers can access rice at reasonable prices.
Amran also reaffirmed Indonesia’s rice self-sufficiency, stating that the achievement has been officially announced by the President both at the national level in Karawang and in international forums. He said the milestone demonstrates Indonesia’s growing resilience in food security.
