KBRN, Jakarta: Marking a historic leap in international military technology, PT PAL Indonesia announced on Thursday, December 18, 2025, the successful development of the world’s first portable laser weapon.
Under the leadership of Kaharuddin Djenod, the state-owned shipbuilder conducted a live demonstration for military officials to showcase the weapon's precision and lethal power, proving that Indonesia can now compete globally through domestic technological independence.
As quoted by Antara, this innovation aligns with the Indonesian government’s initiative to accelerate domestic technological independence to compete globally and reduce reliance on foreign products. The advanced laser weapon was officially introduced and tested before military high-ranking officials on Thursday.
A historic milestone occurred when Deputy Defense Minister Donny Ermawan Taufanto and PT PAL President Director Kaharuddin Djenod conducted a live firing demonstration. This weapon is designed to focus laser radiation with precision, delivering lethal destructive power to targets at medium to long ranges.
Remarkably, this laser weapon has an effective range of up to 500 meters and is fully portable, an achievement cited as a world first. Serving as a new ultimate weapon for the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL), this laser innovation is planned for installation on the "Red and White" Frigate, Indonesia’s flagship warship currently under construction.
The development of this innovation demonstrates a strong commitment from PT PAL and its stakeholders to build maritime sovereignty. Kaharuddin Djenod said that technological innovation is not merely about prestige but is a serious effort to enhance the competitiveness of the national maritime industry internationally through proven, tangible works.
According to Kaharuddin, independence in the maritime defense industry directly elevates Indonesia’s bargaining position in global defense and economic diplomacy. He emphasized that amid global uncertainty, the strength of the defense industry is a strategic instrument to maintain stability in the Indo-Pacific region while strengthening Indonesia's position as a key global player. ***
