KBRN, Medan: The Indonesian Ministry of Culture began restoration efforts on damaged cultural heritage sites in Sumatra following recent natural disasters. The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to protecting historical assets affected by floods and landslides.
The Cultural Preservation Center Region II in North Sumatra launched the recovery program, Sunday (12/7/2025). The priority sites include Azizi Mosque, the Langkat Sultanate Tombs, and the historic Tjong A Fie Mansion.
Teams of the Cultural Preservation Center have been coordinating with site caretakers to minimize further deterioration and accelerate the restoration process. Limited access due to high water levels has caused recovery activities to proceed gradually in several locations.
Caretakers reported that Azizi Mosque experienced structural damage, particularly to its perimeter fence. Strong flood currents caused sections of the fence to collapse and pushed water into parts of the mosque.
Post-flood assessments showed that approximately 24 meters of the mosque’s fence were damaged across six sections. Floodwaters also brought mud into the prayer hall, covering the entire floor surface.
Initial recovery measures included removing mud deposits, draining remaining water, and stabilizing the Langkat Sultanate Tombs with soil reinforcement. Flooding in the mosque’s courtyard continues to limit broader cleanup operations.
The Ministry also confirmed that the Tjong A Fie Mansion in Medan suffered moisture-related deterioration after water entered the building from nearby roads. The incident caused damp walls, weakened wooden structures, and discoloration on the floors.
