KBRN, Jakarta: Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has announced that a tropical disturbance in the Malacca Strait has developed into Tropical Cyclone Senyar as of Wednesday (11/26/2025) morning. The Agency's head, Teuku Faisal Fathani, said that it is moving west to southwestward toward the island of Sumatra, with wind speeds of up to 10 km per hour.
"Based on the atmospheric analysis as of today, Wednesday, 26 November 2025, at 7 a.m. Western Indonesian Time, the system has intensified and is officially classified as Tropical Cyclone Senyar, which is currently observed over the eastern Malacca Strait off the coast of Aceh," he said in a press conference in Jakarta, Wednesday.
According to him, the cyclone at the Malacca Strait moved with maximum wind speeds around the epicenter reaching 43 knots (80 km/hour). It moved westward toward the Aceh mainland at around 10 km/hour over the past six hours, triggering increased convective clouds in the surrounding region.
"Over the next 6 to 24 hours, the cyclone is expected to continue moving westward and southwestward as it interacts with land, and will weaken gradually," he said.
However, Fathani warned about potential natural disasters in provinces across northern Sumatra in the coming days. This could affect the North Sumatran capital city, Medan, which with its 2.5 million population, is Indonesia's fourth-largest city after Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bandung.
"Extreme weather still has the potential to occur as a follow-on impact, so the potential impacts of hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, flash floods, and landslides must continue to be watched for in the regions of Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau Islands, Riau, West Sumatra, and the surrounding areas over the next two to three days," he explained.
Tropical Cyclone Senyar began as tropical disturbance 95B, which originally came from the strait. BMKG said it had predicted the cyclone for almost a week.
"We had already identified Cyclone Senyar since 21 November. BMKG has able to make predictions even before a tropical disturbance or a tropical cyclone grows," the Agency's Director of Public Meteorology, Andri Ramdani, said.
BMKG highlighted the potential for heavy rainfall, especially in Aceh and North Sumatra, alongside strong winds in several locations and high waves in the Malacca Strait. The agency urged the local population to remain calm, stay updated by officials, and avoid unreliable or unverified reports.
As of Thursday morning (11/27/2025), the BMKG-operated Tropical Cyclone Warning Center (TCWC) Jakarta recorded that Tropical Cyclone Senyar had reached Sumatra. It is expected to move eastward toward Malaysian territories.
