KBRN, Jakarta: During the 80th anniversary military parade of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) at Monas, Jakarta, on Sunday, October 5, 2025, several newly acquired defense assets were showcased. These assets are expected to arrive in Indonesia soon to strengthen the TNI’s defense capabilities.
One of the highlights is the Italian aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi, which is set to join and reinforce Indonesia’s military fleet.
The acquisition process for Giuseppe Garibaldi is currently in its final stages. The National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) has approved a foreign loan with a maximum ceiling of USD 450 million, or approximately IDR 7.47 trillion.
This figure mirrors the initial procurement cost of the Satria-1 satellite before it rose to USD 540 million. Giuseppe Garibaldi was launched on June 11, 1983, and officially retired on October 1, 2024.
The carrier is equipped with STOVL (Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing) capabilities, allowing aircraft to land vertically like helicopters.
Giuseppe Garibaldi measures 1,802 meters in length and 334 meters in width, with a displacement of 10,100 tons. It is powered by four CODAG Fiat turbines generating 81,000 horsepower (60 MW).
The vessel can reach speeds of up to 30 knots (56 km/h) and has a cruising range of 7,000 nautical miles. It accommodates 830 personnel, including 550 crew members, 180 Fleet Air Arm personnel, and 100 support staff.
Its defense systems include two SCLAR launchers with 20 barrels for chaff, flares, or decoys. It is also equipped with anti-torpedo systems such as the SLQ-25 Nixie, SLAT, and ECM (Electronic Countermeasure) systems.
For armament, Giuseppe Garibaldi features two eight-cell Mk.29 launchers for Sea Sparrow or Selenia Aspide surface-to-air missiles. It also includes three twin OTO Melara 40L70 DARDO cannons and two triple 324 mm torpedo tubes.
The carrier can transport up to 18 AV-8B Harrier II fighter or bomber aircraft. Its flight deck spans 1,740 meters in length and 300 meters in width.
This asset also supports various helicopter operations for anti-submarine warfare, amphibious assaults, and humanitarian missions. As a command vessel, it serves as an air operations platform and a maritime communications control center. (Naura Sofia/Sri Wahyuni)
