KBRN, Jakarta: The Ministry of Industry is advancing the national bamboo industry ecosystem, integrated from upstream to downstream. This initiative aims to generate higher economic value while strengthening environmental conservation.
Speaking in Jakarta on Monday (29/9/2025), Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, said that Indonesia’s bamboo industry has enormous potential to grow across multiple sectors. These include handicrafts, furniture, construction, and even bio-industries.
Besides, Agus explained that the ministry has designed several strategic programs to support bamboo industry development. These programs are expected to improve the competitiveness of Indonesian bamboo products in the global market.
Previously, Acting Director General of Agro-Industry, Ministry of Industry, Putu Juli Ardika, conducted a working visit to Yogyakarta. The visit not only revealed strong industry potential but also challenges, including raw material availability, supply chain issues, and workforce skills.
According to Putu, global demand for value-added bamboo products continues to rise. For instance, export demand for bamboo container flooring has reached 1,500 cubic meters per month, while domestic production capacity is only around 30 cubic meters.
Beyond exports, the domestic market is also expanding rapidly, particularly in construction for tourism areas such as Bali, Mandalika, Lombok, and Labuan Bajo. Bamboo-based buildings can reach prices of IDR 12 million per square meter, with a faster return on investment compared to concrete structures.
During his Yogyakarta visit, Putu inspected the Industrial Services and Standardization Center for Handicrafts and Batik, the Sahabat BambuBoss community, and PT Bambu Nusa Verde. The visit mapped a growing bamboo ecosystem that connects research, communities, and industry.
Putu further conveyed the need for cross-sector collaboration to strengthen the bamboo industry. The ministry is preparing investment incentives, a raw material hub, and a Community Academy to strengthen competitiveness and human resource skills.
