KBRN, Jakarta: A Brazilian mountaineer, Juliana Marins, initials JDSP, aged 27, has been confirmed dead after falling during an ascent of Mount Rinjani in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. A joint Search and Rescue (SAR) team located her body approximately 600 meters down a cliff face.

“At 6 p.m. local time, a Basarnas rescuer named Khafid Hasyadi successfully reached the victim. Upon examination, no signs of life were found,” said Chief of the National SAR Agency (Basarnas), Air Marshal TNI Mohammad Syaugi, as quoted by RRI Mataram on Tuesday, 24 June 2025.

Rescue efforts were hindered by deteriorating weather and limited visibility, delaying the evacuation. Authorities plan to resume recovery operations on Wednesday morning, 25 June 2025, using a lifting method, before transferring the body to West Nusa Tenggara Police's Bhayangkara Hospital.

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, expressed condolences to the family of Juliana Marins, who died during her climb on Saturday. She also commended the swift response by the SAR team, the Mount Rinjani National Park Authority, and all involved parties.

“We are grateful for the prompt coordination and maximum efforts, especially from the Mount Rinjani National Park Authority and Basarnas, in the evacuation of Miss Juliana Marins,” Widiyanti said during a press conference following her review of school holiday preparations at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The minister underscored the importance of tourist safety at high-risk destinations such as Mount Rinjani. She expressed hope that this incident would be the last of its kind and reiterated the government’s target of zero accidents across all national tourist destinations.

“We sincerely hope this will be the last. Just one incident can significantly impact Indonesia’s tourism image on the global stage,” she said.

Widiyanti added that the government is maintaining open communication with the victim’s family and the Brazilian Embassy to ensure transparency and the accurate relay of information. ***
