KBRN, Jakarta: The Indonesian Ministry of Culture has officially opened submissions for the 2025 Anugerah Musik Indonesia (AMI) Awards, the country’s most prestigious music award event. Now in its 28th year, the AMI Awards continues to grow in both scope and impact, serving as a key platform for recognizing Indonesia’s musical talent and promoting cultural diplomacy through music.

At a media briefing held Thursday, (5/6/2025) in Jakarta, Minister of Culture Fadli Zon emphasized the awards' role in reflecting the spirit and evolution of Indonesia’s music scene.

“For almost three decades, we have witnessed the transformation of Indonesian music—from cassette and CD eras to digital and social media platforms. What remains constant is music’s ability to unite us in diversity, express identity, and strengthen our national character,” he said.

The AMI Awards, often dubbed “Indonesia’s Grammy Awards,” have seen a significant rise in participation. By 2024, over 5,000 songs were submitted, highlighting not only the growth of the industry but also the expanding space for diverse genres and cultural identities. This diversity is a key strength as Indonesia aims to elevate its music on the global stage.

Minister Fadli also stressed the importance of supporting traditional music genres like keroncong and dangdut, which are gaining international attention. He called for improved performance venues and recognition of these traditional forms as vital parts of Indonesia’s cultural identity. “These are genres that speak to who we are and deserve to be celebrated at home and abroad,” he stated.

Two new award categories—Contemporary Music and Vocal Director—have been introduced this year to better capture evolving industry trends. AMI Foundation Chairman Candra Darusman said the additions reflect the growing importance of music education and the creative roles behind vocal performances.

“These new categories will help recognize contributors who often work behind the scenes,” he explained.

Singer Syaharani, a member of the AMI categorization board, echoed the need for strong institutional collaboration.

“AMI encourages creativity and helps improve the quality of music that represents Indonesia internationally. This partnership with the Ministry of Culture is crucial for long-term growth,” she noted.

The Ministry also sees the AMI Awards as a powerful tool for soft power diplomacy, promoting Indonesian culture through music. As part of this effort, the government aims to increase access to music production and distribution, especially via digital and social platforms, while also reinforcing public appreciation of music as a vital cultural asset.

Submissions for the 2025 AMI Awards are open from May 27 to July 5, 2025, for music released between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025. Artists and labels can register online at manage.ami-awards.com/label. The Ministry hopes this year’s entries will further demonstrate the richness and innovation of Indonesian music to the world.
