KBRN, Jakarta: The government has reaffirmed its strong commitment to the green energy transition by utilizing domestic resources including renewable energy such as hydrogen as the backbone of sustainable development.
“Indonesia will always uphold its commitment to the Paris Agreement. Green energy and hydrogen are part of the President’s grand vision,” said Indonesia’s Energy and Mineral Resources Minister, Bahlil Lahadalia during the opening of the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit 2025 in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, as quoted by rri.co.id.
He explained that Indonesia possesses three primary hydrogen sources: coal, gas, and abundant water resources. These are key assets for realizing a national green energy industry.
Minister Bahlil added that Indonesia has the world’s sixth-largest coal reserves and significantly increasing gas production. As an archipelagic country with abundant water resources, Indonesia is well-positioned for sustainable hydrogen production.
He noted that hydrogen could create up to 300,000 jobs and generate USD 70 billion in foreign exchange. This potential positions Indonesia as a major player in the global energy market.
Bahlil emphasized that the government is also preparing supporting infrastructure, including green energy charging stations by state-owned electricity company (PLN). This strategy demonstrates Indonesia’s readiness for transitioning to clean energy in the future.
In addition to hydrogen, Indonesia has solar, wind, and hydropower potential totaling 3,600 gigawatts.
“This potential must be optimally utilized with environmentally friendly technological approaches,” he said.
He further said that the government is inviting global collaboration in research, investment, and green energy technology transfer. The goal is to protect the planet, foster growth, and ensure national energy sovereignty. ***
