KBRN, Jakarta: The Minister of Elementary and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen), Abdul Mu'ti, plans to reintroduce science, social studies, and language majors in Senior High Schools, which is scheduled to take effect in the 2025/2026 academic year.

"This is a leak, we will revive the majors. So there will be science, social studies, and language majors again," said Minister Muti at a halal bihalal (post-ramadan gathering) event with the Education Journalists Forum (Fortadik) at his office, Jakarta on Friday, April 11, 2025, as quoted by rri.co.id.

Furthermore, he explained that the specialization aims to support the implementation of the Academic Ability Test (TKA). He noted that the TKA is a key consideration in the admission process for new university students.

"Later, it will begin to be tested for students in grade 12 or grade 3 of high school. Namely in November this year," the Minister said.

Moving forward, TKA will likely become subject-based, particularly for students planning to attend college.

"Because the test is subject based, we will revive the majors in the future. So, there will be science, social studies, and language majors again," he added.

Later in the TKA, the Minister continued, students from all three majors will take mandatory Indonesian and Mathematics, along with subjects specific to their departments.

Science majors can supplement their mandatory Indonesian and Mathematics tests with additional Physics, Chemistry, or Biology tests. Similarly, social studies majors can opt for further testing in Economics, History, and other social science subjects.

"In this way, a person's academic ability will become the foundation when they want to continue to college in a particular major. So, it can be seen from the value of academic ability," he explained.

During the 2019-2024 term of the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Minister Nadiem Makarim, the academic majors of Science, Social Studies, and Language were abolished. Nadiem argued that the existence of these majors reflected a principle of injustice, as most parents would preferentially place their child in the science stream. ***
