KBRN, Jakarta: Public broadcasting institutions (LPP) in Indonesia, both the national radio station RRI and national television channel TVRI, are different from those in European and American countries, lawmaker Yulius Setiarto said.

The member of the House of Representatives Commission I pointed out that in those countries, official broadcasting stations are government-owned. In Indonesia, these are classified as public broadcasting institutions, even though their funding and operations are fully covered by the government or state.

"It feels somewhat odd that these institutions (RRI and TVRI) are state-funded, their employees are civil servants, yet they are regarded as public broadcasting institutions. This classification creates ambiguity," Yulius remarked during a dialog with Pro 3 RRI on Monday, March 10, 2025, as reported by rri.co.id.

Therefore, Yulius encouraged RRI and TVRI to change their status to state broadcasting institutions.

"This means that these institutions must truly become state broadcasting institutions, so that the interests of the state are prioritized," he said.

Yulius explained that although similarities exist, in the context of news reporting, a distinction must be made between public and state broadcasting institutions.

"So, the guidance is clear, our state consensus serves as the foundation for the direction of the state broadcasting institution," he stated.

He also mentioned that a state broadcasting institution does not need to precisely follow the models implemented in other countries.

"Further details must be formulated later, particularly concerning technical operations and practical implementations," Yulius stated.

"What is clear is that the vision for this state broadcasting institution must embody the essence of Indonesia. It should serve as the nation's media, especially on the international stage, becoming Indonesia's official reference and news source abroad," he concluded. ***
