RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto led a limited meeting with several ministers of the Merah Putih Cabinet at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday, 11 February 2026. In the meeting, the Head of State provided several strategic directives, among them was related to the acceleration of waste processing technology development, particularly on a micro scale, as a complement to the ongoing Waste to Energy program.
The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, in his statement to the media after the meeting, explained that President Prabowo affirmed the importance of accelerating innovations that have been developed within higher education institutions.
"So, the President directed, besides the ongoing Waste to Energy, the acceleration of micro-scale waste processing technologies already developed in several campuses were requested by the President," Brian conveyed.
According to him, several of these technologies are currently operational and ready to be accelerated through trials in various regions. He stated that the development will be carried out in an integrated manner with Danantara to ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of the program.
"There are several technologies that were discussed earlier, we will soon identify and collaborate with Danantara so that waste management will also be carried out at the micro levels, at the sub-district level more effectively," he said.
In its implementation, the government also ensures that environmental aspects are a top priority. The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology will coordinate with the Ministry of Environment (LH) to ensure that the technology implemented does not have negative impacts. Furthermore, the government will soon hold a follow-up meeting with the Ministry of Environment, Danantara, and local governments to encourage broader implementation.
"So we will soon hold a meeting with the Environmental Agency and Danantara for more large-scale development of the technology, so that the standards are also better. And also earlier with the local government, we will soon conduct trials in several cities, and this is expected to also accelerate waste management while waiting for the Waste to Energy project that Danantara is currently running," Brian stated.
Regarding the timeline, the government aims to start trials this year in several sub-districts. The scale of the handling prepared is also focused on the volume of waste at the sub-district or village level.
"Approximately 10 tons per day, so the waste in the sub-district, in the village, is about 10 tons per day, and that is what we will try to address," Brian conveyed.
Unlike the Waste to Energy concept that generates electricity, Brian mentioned that this micro-scale technology focuses on reducing and processing waste into valuable derivative materials.
This step marks the government's strategy in building a more adaptive waste management ecosystem, combining technological innovation, the role of higher education institutions, as well as cross-ministerial and regional government collaboration, while simultaneously accelerating the realization of a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
