International Dot Day was inspired by the children’s book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. Published by Candlewick Press in 2003, the book tells the story of Vashti, a child who believes she cannot draw until her teacher encourages her to make a simple mark on a piece of paper.

Starting with a small dot, Vashti gradually gains the confidence to create her own work. The story shows that a creative work does not always have to begin with something complicated, but can start with the courage to try.
The idea from the book was later brought into a classroom by a teacher named Terry Shay on September 15, 2009. That simple act eventually grew into a celebration involving communities and educational institutions in various countries.
As it has grown, International Dot Day has come to represent more than drawing or creating works of art. The celebration also encourages people to develop their imagination, collaborate with others, and avoid limiting themselves when trying something new.
The message has become increasingly relevant amid the growth of technology and various forms of creative media. A simple idea can be developed into writing, illustrations, videos, music, or other digital works when people give themselves room to be creative.
