RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Cats are the most popular pets among Indonesians. A 2021 survey by Rakuten Insight found that around 47 percent of respondents in Indonesia own a cat, the highest proportion among the 12 Asian countries included in the survey. The finding highlights Indonesians' strong preference for cats as household companions.
The popularity of cats in Indonesia reflects a broader global trend. Their affectionate nature, adaptability, and relatively low-maintenance have made them one of the world's favorite companion animals.
According to Cat Ownership Statistics 2026, the United States has the world's largest pet cat population, with approximately 76.5 million cats. China ranks second with around 58 million, followed by Russia with approximately 25 million pet cats.
Although Indonesia is not among the countries with the largest pet cat populations in absolute numbers, it has a high rate of cat ownership when measured by the percentage of households or survey respondents who keep cats. This suggests that cats hold a special place in the daily lives of many Indonesians.
The growing popularity of cats also reflects changing lifestyles. Keeping pets is no longer viewed simply as a hobby, but has become an important part of modern living. For many people, pets provide emotional support, companionship, and a stronger sense of well-being.
The TGM Pet Care Ownership & Lifestyle Insights 2026 – Indonesia Edition reports that an increasing number of Indonesian pet owners consider their pets to be family members as well as loyal companions. This emotional connection influences how owners care for their pets and prioritize their needs.
The report also reveals that 34 percent of respondents regard their pets as part of the family. In addition, nearly half of pet owners said they had increased their spending on pet-related products and services compared with the previous year. These findings indicate that Indonesia's pet culture continues to grow, driven by greater attention to animal welfare and a stronger willingness among owners to invest in their pets' care.
