RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s cinematic footprint in North America has received a prestigious boost, with local short films capturing the spotlight at the EuroAsia Shorts 2026 festival in Washington DC, paving an incremental path toward the Academy Awards.

The annual film festival, which bridges visionary short-form narratives from Asian and European filmmakers, unfolded during the second week of June under the sweeping seasonal theme Past/Present/Future.

As part of the festival's landmark 20th-anniversary lineup, the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Washington co-hosted a specialized Austrian-Indonesian Partner Film Night on Monday, June 8, 2026. Held at the Embassy of Austria, the collaborative screening drew a diverse crowd of over 500 film professionals, foreign diplomats, academics, and cinephiles.

Indonesia showcased two evocative shorts detailing distinct cultural dimensions: Kepaten Obor by director Lukman Hakim, and Daly City, an acclaimed project by US-based Indonesian diaspora filmmaker Nick Hartanto.

The presentation of Daly City carried significant industry weight, as the film has officially attained Oscar-qualifying status, positioning it within the selective pipeline eligible for consideration at the upcoming Academy Awards. Festival delegates noted that another contemporary Indonesian short, Anak Macan by Amar Haikal, has also independently secured its spot in the Oscar-qualifying circuit.

"Indonesian films possess a quality of storytelling and cultural strength capable of speaking to global audiences. Therefore, we must continue to support filmmakers so that more Indonesian works can appear and compete in various international festivals," Indonesian Ambassador to the United States, Indroyono Soesilo, noted in an official statement released via KBRI Washington on Thursday, June 11, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Indroyono emphasized that establishing a permanent footprint on international festival circuits does more than map an avenue toward the Oscars; it serves as a lucrative engine to scale Indonesia’s domestic creative economy.

Furthermore, the Ambassador underscored that cinema transcends pure commercial entertainment, functioning as a highly effective vehicle for cultural diplomacy that humanizes and clarifies Indonesia's multifaceted identity to a global demographic.

The EuroAsia Shorts 2026 festival is organized through a joint coalition of international embassies and foreign cultural institutes based in the US capital, cementing cultural exchange as a vital bridge for global artistic communities. ***
