RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Organizers of the Jakarta Millennial Film Festival (JMFF) 2026 are optimistic that the establishment of a Jakarta Film Commission will mark a turning point for Indonesia’s film industry. They believe the commission will strengthen the local ecosystem and expand opportunities for filmmakers.

“This is a strategic step to reinforce the film ecosystem in Jakarta and Indonesia,” said JMFF 2026 Chairperson Budi Mulyawan in a statement on Thursday, June 11, 2026.

He said the commission should provide tangible support to filmmakers, broaden access to production and distribution channels, and foster the creation of quality works capable of competing internationally.

Budi emphasized that creating a Jakarta Film Commission is an essential part of a broader effort to transform Jakarta into a cinema city. “Jakarta has great potential as a creative industry hub, especially for film,” he said, as quoted by Antara.

With the right policies, adequate infrastructure, and cross‑sector collaboration, Jakarta could become a birthplace of outstanding works, a film production center, and an attractive destination for national and international filmmakers.

He outlined several priorities for realizing the cinema‑city vision: simplifying permitting processes, providing film‑friendly shooting locations, upgrading human resources, and expanding access to distribution and promotion in global markets.

Budi said Indonesia’s film community places high hopes on the commission to drive this agenda and strengthen the country’s position on the world film map.

JMFF 2026 opened at GOR Otistain Jatinegara, East Jakarta, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, as a platform for young filmmakers, featuring workshops and a short‑film festival. The event, attended by participants from across Java and Bali, offers spaces for expression, education, and collaboration to help young talent develop within the film industry.

In addition to a short‑film competition, the festival features workshops led by creative‑industry practitioners. Organizers hope the festival will serve not only as a contest but also as a catalyst for emerging filmmakers who can represent Indonesia internationally. ***
