RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Have you ever suddenly felt sleepy, unfocused, and unmotivated to work in the middle of the day even though your workload is still piling up? This condition is commonly experienced by many people and is known as an afternoon slump.

An afternoon slump is a condition in which the body’s energy decreases during the afternoon and early evening. Symptoms may include excessive drowsiness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, headaches, and mood swings. Although it may seem harmless, this condition can interfere with daily productivity if it happens continuously.

So, what actually causes an afternoon slump?

According to Halodoc, one of the main causes is hormonal changes in the body. Cortisol, a hormone that helps maintain energy and focus, tends to decline during the day, causing the body to feel more tired and sleepy. In addition, lack of sleep is also a common trigger because the body does not get enough rest.

A diet high in sugar and carbohydrates can also make the body feel weak and unfocused. Prolonged stress and a lack of physical activity or exercise may further affect the body’s energy levels, making daytime drowsiness more likely to occur.

However, an afternoon slump can actually be prevented and managed through several simple habits.

Eat a Nutritious Lunch

Choose a low-carbohydrate lunch and include more protein and vegetables. Lean protein such as chicken, fiber-rich vegetables, healthy fats like avocados and nuts, along with plenty of water, can help the body digest food better and maintain energy levels.

Take a Short Power Nap

If possible, take a 10–15 minute power nap before or after lunch to restore energy and improve focus.

Get Some Sunlight or Stay in a Bright Area

Exposure to bright light, especially sunlight, can help the body feel more alert. Try standing near a window or going outside for a few minutes to get some sunlight. Working in a brightly lit room may also help improve alertness.

Chew Gum

Chewing gum may help increase alertness, focus, and responsiveness while working. The jaw movement involved in chewing can act as a temporary distraction from drowsiness and help the body stay active.

Take a Walk or Do Light Stretching

Taking a short walk around the office or doing light stretches can help improve blood circulation and reduce sleepiness. Physical activity can also ease muscle stiffness caused by sitting too long in front of a computer, helping maintain productivity throughout the day.

Most importantly, make sure to get enough sleep, manage stress properly, and maintain a healthy lifestyle so that afternoon slump does not continue to disrupt your daily productivity.
