RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - For some people, especially women, nails are one of the jewels that must be properly cared for after hair. Clean and neat nails enhance a person's attractiveness and boost their self-confidence, especially for those who frequently interact with or meet people in their daily activities.
Caring for neat nails requires regularity, not just expensive products. Here are the key points:
- The key is routine, not expensive.
- Classic manicure + regular polish: Reapply every week. Regular polish lasts 7 days, while gel-effect formulas can last 10-11 days. Soft/brittle nails peel more quickly.
- Semi-permanent polish: Every 2-3 weeks. For strong nails, every 3 weeks is sufficient, while for weak nails, every 2 weeks is recommended. Daily activities such as typing, cleaning, or DIY activities can damage the polish more quickly.
- Gel extensions: Reapply every 2-3 weeks as well.
The myth that "nails need to breathe" is false.
Nails don't breathe. Continuous manicures don't damage them from the inside. If your nails feel soft after removing gel/semi-permanent polish, that's normal because the keratin hasn't had time to renew itself. A few weeks off is enough to strengthen them. Nail condition is more influenced by your body's health.
Minimalist nail polish is also possible
You don't always have to wear polish. A simple manicure every two weeks at a salon to clean your nails and care for your cuticles is sufficient. At home, simply massage your cuticles with a nourishing balm daily.
If you want to DIY (do it yourself) at home
Prepare a 220/240-grit nail file, cuticle pusher, moisturizer, and alcohol to clean your nails. Homemade products last 7-12 days. Salon results are more durable due to professional techniques and tools.
Examples of DIY projects that often cause nail polish to wear out quickly:
- Minor renovations: painting walls, installing shelves, taking furniture apart and putting it back together
- Crafts: making candles, knitting, scrapbooking, painting pots
- Home improvements: fixing leaky faucets, replacing light bulbs, sanding wood
- Decorations: making wall hangings, recycling old items
Why DIY activities are important to consider is that they often expose nails to impact, chemicals, water, or friction. This can cause nail polish to peel quickly or make them brittle.
Bottom line: Consistency is key. Choose a schedule of once every 1-3 weeks depending on the type of treatment you're applying. Keep your cuticles moisturized daily. A good nail technician will let you know when your nails need a break, so you don't have to guess.
