RRI.CO.ID, Bengkulu - In observance of World Book and Copyright Day on April 23, stakeholders in Bengkulu have intensified efforts to encourage reading among young people, viewing the occasion as an important step toward fostering a culture of literacy and respect for intellectual property.

Local libraries emphasized that the commemoration serves as a reminder of reading’s role as the foundation of knowledge. They noted that literacy is essential in shaping critical and creative thinking, particularly in an era of rapid information exchange.

Tutik, a librarian in Bengkulu, said public interest in reading, especially among the younger generation, still needs to be strengthened through various literacy programs.

These include providing engaging reading materials and organizing educational activities with schools and universities. “For those who wish to read at the library, the process is simple: just register as a member by bringing a valid form of identification. Once registered, visitors can access various book collections and reading facilities free of charge,” she said on Thursday, April 23, 2026

Student-led literacy organizations also highlighted the role of youth in driving a reading culture within their communities.

Ikhsan, a student and coordinator of the Literacy Student Activity Unit at Dehasen University Bengkulu, said initiatives such as book discussions, literary reviews, and reading campaigns are consistently carried out.

“We want literacy to go beyond the act of reading. It is about how students can think critically and share their passion for reading with the wider community. Through activities like discussions, book reviews, and literacy campaigns, we hope the culture of reading will flourish and become a social norm,” he remarked.

The commemoration is expected to serve as a catalyst for raising public awareness of the importance of literacy. With collaboration among multiple stakeholders, a sustainable reading culture is envisioned to grow and thrive across society. (Annaila Azzahra/Lasti Martina)
