RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The snakehead fish (Channa striata), known locally in Indonesia as ikan gabus, has been gaining renewed attention as a potential local superfood amid growing demand for healthy, locally sourced food.
Researcher of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Ekowati Chasanah, during a webinar on April 16, 2026, said this freshwater fish has an impressive nutritional profile, being rich in protein and containing various bioactive compounds beneficial for health.
According to her, snakehead fish contains high-quality, easily digestible protein, along with complete essential and non-essential amino acids. This makes it particularly suitable for meeting nutritional needs, especially for children and individuals in recovery.
So, what are the health benefits of snakehead fish?
Accelerates Wound Healing
This benefit comes from its albumin content and amino acids such as glycine, proline, and alanine, which support tissue regeneration. The combination helps speed up wound healing, including post-surgery recovery.
Supports Physical Recovery
Its high-quality, easily absorbed protein makes snakehead fish effective in supporting physical recovery by helping repair damaged cells and tissues.
Maintains Fluid Balance
The high albumin content helps regulate the body’s fluid balance while also supporting the transport of essential substances such as hormones and nutrients.
Potential to Reduce Disease Risk
Snakehead fish also contains bioactive compounds, including peptides and fatty acids, which may provide additional benefits such as helping regulate blood pressure.
Improves Overall Health
The combination of complete protein, micronutrients, and active compounds makes snakehead fish a nutritious food that supports overall health, including immunity and metabolic function.
With these advantages, snakehead fish is no longer just a traditional food source, but also as a promising ingredient for innovative functional food products.
However, the BRIN researcher underscored that the nutritional quality of snakehead fish is highly influenced by post-harvest handling. Proper processing methods, such as indirect heating, are essential to maintain the stability of its nutrients and active compounds.
