RRI.CO.ID, Penajam Paser Utara - The Kalimantan Tribute rally has revived the spirit of the legendary 1996 Camel Trophy, as 48 off-road vehicles set out from Balikpapan to retrace one of Asia’s most iconic adventure routes.
After a brief ceremony in Balikpapan, participants -- among them several foreign enthusiasts -- reached their first stop at Camp Sotek along the Toyu River in Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan, on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.
“Welcome, enjoy the camp area by the Toyu River,” expedition leader Greefion Kamil greeted the convoy upon arrival at Kilometer 35 Sotek, as quoted by Antara.
The rally is designed not only as an off-road journey but also as a historical tribute, offering the automotive community a chance to relive the atmosphere of the 1996 expedition. Organizers emphasized safety and environmental preservation as participants prepare to tackle challenging terrain across forests, rivers, and hills.
Camp Sotek serves as the first checkpoint, where vehicles undergo scrutineering and teams receive route orientation, safety briefings, and task assignments. “Participants are introduced to obstacles they will encounter throughout the journey,” said scout tracker Insuhendang.
Logistical hurdles added to the adventure: staggered ferry crossings over Balikpapan Bay delayed the final convoy, which arrived in Penajam late at night due to port repairs.
Among the international participants is Bernard from Marseille, France, a Land Rover dealer who described joining the rally as “a dream come true.” Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles were the official cars of the original Camel Trophy.
The rally will continue westward, with upcoming stages featuring more technical terrain. Before entering Central Kalimantan at Muara Teweh, participants are scheduled to carry out a community service program, including visits to remote schools along the route. ***
