RRI.CO.Id, Jakarta – Every April 9 is observed as International ASMR Day, an occasion that highlights a relaxation phenomenon that has grown increasingly popular in the digital age. The observance is closely linked to Jennifer Allen, who first introduced the term Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response in 2010.
ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) refers to a calming sensation often described as a gentle tingling, typically beginning at the scalp and spreading throughout the body. It is commonly triggered by stimulus such as whispering, soft tapping, or slow, soothing movements.
Long before the term gained recognition, many people had already experienced this sensation, but struggled to describe it. Through an online forum, Jennifer Allen sought to give a name to this shared yet elusive experience, allowing it to be better understood and more widely discussed.
She deliberately chose the term “Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response” for its scientific and neutral tone. The name was intended to avoid misleading or overly suggestive connotations, while presenting the phenomenon in a more objective and accessible way.
Over time, ASMR has evolved from a niche online discussion into a global trend. Platforms such as YouTube have played a key role in its rise, with creators producing content designed to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve sleep quality.
The selection of April 9 as International ASMR Day marks the anniversary of the term’s introduction in 2010. The observance also serves to raise public awareness of ASMR’s potential benefits, particularly in supporting mental well-being.
What began as a simple effort to name a sensation has since grown into a worldwide phenomenon that brings comfort to millions. International ASMR Day stands as a reminder that even a small idea can have a far-reaching impact on everyday life.
